The 6 Million Dollar Man (or Woman)

“We can rebuild him — we have the technology”6-million-dollar-man

That’s the catch phrase from the 1970’s hit show named the 6 Million Dollar Man. (I’m dating myself :) ) The show was built around the bionic improvements made to a man who suffered severe injuries in an aircraft wreck. With 6 million dollars they were able to replace both of his legs, his right arm and left eye with bionic improvements of the same.

The character of the TV show, post surgery, could run at superhuman speeds, had super human strength and super human vision. In essence, he was an improved man with a greater ability to do good for mankind.

Improving on what one has is no less needed today. My lists for improvements for the New 6 Million Dollar Man (or Woman) are as follows:

An Open Love Letter…to you

Dear xxxxxx,

On this symbolic day of love I am writing this letter to say thank you for all that you do. I know that many times your efforts seem to go unnoticed but I want to assure you that they are not. Many of us notice and highly value what you do on a regular basis and it would be a great loss if you were not involved in the ways that you are.

One thing I love about you is how you continue to do what you do even though the odds seem stacked against you. If one were to focus on the outward appearances, the environment for success appears dismal. All around you are the voices of negativity, dissension, distrust and anger and yet, you stay positive and encouraging through it all. Your smiles and warmth seem to offset the frowns and worries of those you encounter. I love your kindness.

Swatting Mosquitoes

mosquitoes1You hear them buzzing about or you see them circling for attack and you know it’s time for swatting mosquitoes. They are annoying, distracting and potentially dangerous. You can try to avoid them but they are determined to do what they do…stick you and draw blood.

Mosquitoes are like the obstacles you encounter in your pursuit of change and excellence. Seemingly out of nowhere you encounter situations and unfortunately people that can become a major distraction to keep you from reaching your destination. You have got to swat these mosquitoes and keep moving.

Mosquitoes thrive in stagnant water. You cannot make your camp where the waters are not flowing. You have got to move out to where waters are moving. People and situations that are not going anywhere is the last place you want to spend your time.

Haiti – What Can You Do?

The more we see about the earthquake in Haiti, the more we realize that this tragedy is bigger and more horrific than we first imagined. Words like “surreal” and “unbelievable” help summarize the reports we see and hear from the eye witnesses on the ground. For those who died in Haiti, the world did come to an end.

No matter how nice, how new, how expensive, how popular, how trendy or how well liked and desired, a shoe with a rock in it is an unpleasant experience. Just one rock, a small stone in your shoe, will change your outlook on everything.

Until you remove it, none of the superlatives that should be associated with your shoes matters at all. You must remove that rock out of your shoe. As long as the rock is there you can smile and try to go on but the truth is that you are hurting on the inside. The further you try to advance with a rock in your shoe the more pain you will experience. You need relief.

It Doesn’t Matter

The twists and turns of life have a strange way of always bringing us to a moment of clarity. For some that moment only lasts a moment, and then it’s gone. For others, that moment is the beginning of a repositioning of life. They call that an epiphany.  Although life can be full of mind and body absorbing activities, there always seems to come that quiet moment when we all hear the words “What are you doing with your life?”

How bad do you want it?

“How bad do you want it?! How bad do you need it?!” I heard this being said as commentary on a recent exciting sporting event. It followed the display of an exceptional act by an athlete that signaled they were in it to win it.

Everything was on the line and everything available was being used to accomplish the goal of victory. They just wouldn’t go away. Every time it seemed like losing was inevitable they made a play that said “don’t count me out yet”.

Many times we say that we really want something in life. Everything from that special relationship with someone, good health, positive cash flow, higher education, inspired ministries and everlasting salvation are desires we hold. But the question is “How bad do you want it?”

A Million Dollar Idea

I don’t often come up with million dollar ideas, but this is one for sure. I guarantee that the inventor who provides a solution to this problem will be wealthy beyond measure.

What makes this such a sure winner is that the market is huge! It extends beyond ethnic groups and genders. It would be in high demand by young people as well as middle aged and senior citizens.

The financially well-off certainly need it, and those with financial challenges would snap it up as well.

Peddle or Push

Remember learning to ride a bike? Most of us learned by that time tried process called trial and error. The process usually went like this:

1) Climb onto the bike while someone holds it still.

2) Get your feet set on the pedals.

3) Start peddling when your supporter launches you forward.

4) Repeat after falling until that magical moment happens.

The Shortest Distance Between 2 Points

No, I am not referring to the straight line. The shortest distance between 2 points for you and me is the “first step”. It’s not the thoroughness of your planning or even the route that you take, but it’s that first step that unlocks your ability to reach your desired destination.  It doesn’t have to be a big step. It doesn’t have to be a revolutionary step. It doesn’t have to be an unprecedented step. But it must be a step.

All of us have points that we are trying to reach. Many of us are desirous of increasing our usefulness by furthering our education. Getting to the final point of completion can appear daunting. However, if we can just make the first step, we will be on our way. That first step may be completing a registration form and hitting “submit” that will start the ball in motion.
