Who is in Control?

Shocking. Stunning. Devastating. Incredible. Unimaginable. Tragic

These strong adjectives are parts of our daily news headlines. Seemingly overnight we have entered a time that a few years ago, was not thought possible. The fallout from these current worldwide events boils down to individual calamities on a very personal level. The unspoken question of many is “who is in control?”

As our members come out to Sabbath school during these times, many of them have been personally and adversely affected by the drastic downturn in our economy. Job loss, pension loss concerns and foreclosures are issues that our members are dealing with right now. They are asking “who is in control?”

What is the role of Sabbath school during these times? Can Sabbath school be relevant to today’s issues or do we divorce it from the framework of current events? This quarters lesson highlights the subject of the Atonement. We will discuss in great detail its historical, present, and future ramifications. However, will we be able to relate this subject to today’s events?

It will take prayerful study and contemplation to illustrate through our weekly lessons that God is in control. The hope that can only be found in the Word of God provides the answers to all of life’s questions.

“The Bible shows us God in His high and holy place, not in a state of inactivity, not in silence and solitude, but surrounded by ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of holy beings, all waiting to do His will. Through these messengers He is in active communication with every part of His dominion. By His Spirit He is everywhere present. Through the agency of His Spirit and His angels He ministers to the children of men.” Ministry of Healing 417

This quarter, as you prepare your discussion materials on this vital topic of the Atonement, ask God to reveal to you relevant biblical connections and direction to help your members cope during these difficult times. The bible states Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105. Let’s help it to shine as we lead our classes in discussion.

Good job Curtis. This has always been a challenge we teachers face; how do we cover the lesson but yet be relevant to the realities of our members? Asking God to gift us with discernment and be willing to step out of the box will go a long way in addressing this.

    Happy Sabbath

    PS: I miss you all!!!!

So well expressed. Unlike sermons, I think many wonder how can our SS lessons can nurture and equip them …be relevant to what the current climate is. I have wondered this at times. It does take lots of prayer….prayer on the teacher’s end and member’s end. Very good food for thought and certainly prayer.
